Why we web

There's a classic tension in web platform design. Give teams too much flexibility and you get inconsistent, hard-to-maintain sites. Give them too little and you stifle experimentation. Most platforms resolve this by picking a side — and teams live with the tradeoff.

Deco.cx takes a different approach: composability as the core primitive. Everything is a section. Sections have typed props. Props connect to loaders. Loaders fetch data. The entire architecture is explicit, typed, and composable — which means it scales with your team instead of against it.

What Composable Actually Means

"Composable" has become a buzzword, so let's be specific. In Deco.cx, composability means:

  • Any section can be placed on any page without coupling to that page's data
  • Sections declare their own data needs via loaders — no prop drilling from parent to child
  • Apps are self-contained units: they bring their own sections, loaders, and actions
  • Pages are assembled from sections in Studio, without writing code

This means a Hero section built for one campaign can be reused in a product launch without modification. A product carousel can pull from a different data source by swapping its loader. Teams compose experiences the way musicians compose songs — from reusable, interchangeable parts.

The Studio Experience

Where composability pays off most visibly is in Deco Studio. Editors see the page as a list of sections, each with a form for its props. They can reorder, duplicate, remove, and add sections without touching code. Changes preview instantly. Publish with a click.

Deco Studio gives our team the freedom to experiment without waiting on engineering. We shipped a new landing page variant in two hours — without a single PR.

For developers, the Studio experience is a contract: write a section with well-typed props, and non-technical teammates can use it safely. The types you define become the editor's form. No custom CMS schemas to maintain separately from your component props.

Apps as Building Blocks

Deco.cx ships a library of first-party apps — blog, website, commerce, and more — each providing a set of sections and loaders for a specific domain. Installing a new app is a one-liner in your site's app manifest.

Third-party apps follow the same pattern. The community can publish apps with their own sections, loaders, and UI — and any Deco site can install and compose them in Studio. This is how you get the consistency of a platform with the flexibility of custom development.

Customization That Scales

The hardest part of web platform design isn't day one — it's month twelve, when the codebase has grown, the team has changed, and you need to make changes without regressions. Composability is the answer: small, well-defined units with clear contracts are easier to understand, test, and replace than large, coupled systems.

Deco.cx sites start composable and stay that way. That's not an accident — it's the architecture.
